Alice in Wonderland

Yesterday's bright blue leaves reminded me that this weekend we went to see Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. We really enjoyed it, in spite of our worries (we're not Tim Burton fans). I particularly loved the costumes. I'd like to see it again.

My friend Jenny's article, "Lewis Carroll's Shifting Reputation," has been published in the Smithsonian Magazine. It's up on their website. I really enjoyed reading it.

I'm not sure if I need to see this or not. Did I hear that it's not actually the same story as Alice in Wonderland, but is a different story with the same characters?

Though not a Tim Burton fan either, I saw this opening weekend and found it to be very enjoyable. Some Tim Burton characters give me the creeps, and I was worried about Tweedledum and Tweedledee, but even they turned out ok. We saw the 3D version and it was awesome and didn't give me headache or motion sickness.

The story is about Alice returning to Wonderland but the characters keep saying she's not the right Alice. I felt the spectacle and costumes and effects were good, but the story was hackneyed and lacking in magic (maybe I am biased). The acting was so-so. Johnny Depp made the character of Mad Hatter sympathetic and fun, though and the White Queen had a memorable presence. I was very disappointed with H. Bonham Carter as the Red Queen. .
